Defending the Caveman Review -- The Outrageous Truth About the Sexes!

POTATO ON THE GO (Theater):

The Battle of the sexes has been an age old debate subject.  Women have the upper hand with media  blockbusters like Sex and the City and Vagina Monologues.  But men won't take the advantage sitting down.  Let's all give our thanks and praise to Rob Becker for creating the Broadway smash's comedy Defending the Caveman, which is men's latest weapon and one-man answer against the casting ensemble of the earlier mentioned feminist shows.

Defending the Caveman is a solo comedy play that analyzes the roots of the issues and dissects the concerns about the sexes -- contemporary feminism, masculine sensitivity and the erogenous zone.  It tackles the modern day suffering of men against the dominant females, whom many thought as the weaker sex!  =D  And it shows us the prehistoric linkage of this dilemma through a very convincing evolution theory of the caveman and the cavewoman.

And here's my initial comment about the monologue: HAHAHA,  THIS PLAY IS EXTREMELY OUTRAGEOUS AND SUPER HILARIOUS!  I haven't laughed that hard and loud at a theater for a long time until Defending the Caveman!

The play is funny because it talks about reality.  All of us can relate to all the scenarios and thesis statements.  From watching TV to going to party, from cleaning to shopping, from talking to friends to going to bed, Defending the Caveman will open our eyes, and our diaphragm, to awakening yet hilarious realities of men's and women's differences.

But as men finally finds the right battle against the sexual discrimination by Eve's descendants, Defending the Caveman on the other hand is not up to destroying relationships but to understanding our differences.  In fact, I agree that the show can even save marriages!

Stage design is admirable, it's simplistic yet symbolic, just right for Defending the Caveman's theme.

Left painting is a prehistoric art found in 1940 at deep cave in Lascaux, France.  It shows the painting of a man and the bison and it dates approximately 17,000 years ago.  Right painting is The Great Goddess of Laussell.  It was a carving discovered in 1911 not far from Lascaux.  Scholars have suggested her image may have been used to celebrate the mysterious and magical female ability to renew and fully participate in the cycle of life.

And with basic yet effective lighting and sounds, the monologue, the heart and soul of the show, is given its best spotlight moment all throughout the play.

And lastly, Joel Trinidad gives a very outstanding comic performance!  He is delivering the lines as if he's just talking to you, as in, talking to you, just a foot away!  It's like your buddy is sharing his miseries over beer and loud music.  And that's why the play is more realistic, very relevant and a lot fun!  And that wouldn't be possible without the magnificent script from Robert Becker and direction of theater veterans Michael Williams and Cathy Azanza-Dy.  From a scale of 1 to 10 claps, I'm giving Defending Caveman a loud 9 with laughs that can bring me down rolling to the floor!  =D
