This Means Unstoppable Fun! -- THIS MEANS WAR Movie Review

POTATO ON THE GO REVIEW (Movie):

February, the Valentines month, is the time where romantic movies, either drama or comedy, dominate and rule the movie scene.  Year after year, we expect such movies only will be offered and and would be liked by many.  But 20th Century Fox believe otherwise this time around!  Come February 22, a brand new Valentine movie will hit Philippine theaters as 20th Century Fox releases the romantic-action-comedy THIS MEANS WAR!

THIS MEANS WAR tells the story of two of the world’s deadliest CIA operatives who are inseparable partners and best friends FDR Foster (Chris Pine) and Tuck Henson (Tom Hardy) until they fall for the same woman Lauren Scott (Reese Witherspoon). Having once helped bring down entire enemy nations, they are now employing their incomparable skills and an endless array of high-tech gadgetry against their greatest nemesis ever – each other.

And my verdict on the movie is... TWO THUMBS UP!  THIS MEANS WAR is one awesome and outrageous movie, totally entertaining, hilarious and exciting!  From start to finish, fun is unstoppable!  The last time I laughed that loud and long, as in all throughout the movie, was in HANGOVER I!  So just imagine the ride of laughter that awaits you when you see this movie!

Story is not ground breaking, in fact it has been used many times already but the way it has been fleshed out and dissected to deliver a different kind of comedy is the one that pulls up the movie!  Some hilarious scenes may be far from reality but they indeed deliver and made everyone laugh like crazy!  Kudos to the film's scriptwriters Timothy Dowling and Simon Kinberg and director McG.

Pine and Hardy delivered first class comedy!  Pine's animated face and expressive movements make him a perfect choice for the witty and womanizer Foster while Hardy's clueless look and usually awkward movements make him brilliant for the naive yet competitive Henson! The term overacting is out of place in this movie.  Witherspoon delivered comedy through her powerful punchlines and facial expressions and it perfectly blended with the movie's big time scene stealer Chelsea Handler (as Trish, Lauren's best friend who is an expert in relationships and naughtiness!).  Chelsea brought the house down with her commanding sultry voice and sex guru like look!  Aside from the three main characters, Trish is someone to look out for in this movie.  You will surely fall from your seats once you see her hilarious scenes in the movie.

Thanks to the movie's brilliant editing and scoring, Foster's and Henson's spy scenes make the movie intense and exciting!  Art direction and sound engineering help the movie keep the logic and realism despite the movie's far from reality setting.  Action scenes are well executed and the surprise rescue is another thing that made me almost roll over the floor.  Watch out for Chelsea Handler in that scene!

And with all the fun in store in the movie, what then would be the film's redeeming value?  Well, for me, it would be friendship has its ups and downs but in times of critical need, the real friend will come out to be at your side.

The setbacks I noticed is the on and off British accent of Hardy (which is quite few to be fair) and the way how the movie has been resolved.  I can't dwell into details but it's about one of the characters whom I felt deserve a comeback kick.  :)

Anyway, above all, I consider THIS MEANS WAR as a break and a brand new offering this Valentines Month.  Couples will definitely have a great time in this movie.

From a scale of 1 to 10 claps, I'm giving THIS MEANS WAR a big eight!  From 20th Century Fox and directed by McG, THIS MEANS WARS opens in theaters this coming February 22!  Go watch it and experience the unstoppable fun!  :)
