Resorts World Manila Brings In World Class Theater Via The Sound of Music

POTATO ON THE GO (Theater):

When Resorts World Manila claimed that The Sound of Music is a world class theater production, I asked myself how can they exactly qualify that.  Well, after seeing the musical at its premiere, I was easily convinced why it is called as such.

A musical by Richard Rodgers with lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II and book by Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse, The Sound of Music is the story of a young postulant, Maria Rainer, who is appointed governess of the seven children of widower Captain Georg von Trapp. She teaches them the rudiments of music and allows them to discover a talent for singing they never once thought they possessed. In the process, the Captain's cold and stern heart turns soft towards his children, while the stiff, professional relationship he once had with Maria gives way unexpectedly to love. Soon, they find themselves threatened by uncertainties of wartime as they struggle to build a new life together.

So, why is The Sound of Music world class?

The staging was truly magnificent!  Set design, props and costume were truly exceptional.  I've never seen such kind done in theater.  Resorts World was able to build a cathedral, a mansion, alps and an interactive theater in the the three hour musical!  Even at the start of the show, I was already in awe as I see the enormous gates and halls of the abbey put in place, the lights establish the set, and the nuns sang majestically!

The scene at the alps when Maria (Joanna Ampil) was playing and singing were well presented through the backdrop video produced by Paul Soriano.  It also worked best when Maria first went to the mansion where it showed the lead's journey.  And together with the 360 degree revolving part of the stage, it creatively showed motion and adventure.  And of course, the mansion where the von Trapp live was very spectacular!  It's as if a real house brought on stage!

What else makes it world class?

The actors!  Either they are currently performing internationally or their talents are of global standards and destined to be recognized abroad.  Joanna Ampil was so perfect for the role and sang beautifully each of Maria's song and I didn't notice Audie Gemora on stage as what I saw was Captain Georg von Trapp.  Pinky Amador again showed her sultry side but this time in a musical way.  The von Trapp kids of course were so pleasing to the eyes and ears as they playfully sing, dance and act.  The audience smiles were kept glued when they perform and on stage, think of the Do a Dear, the farewell scene and the Favorite Things, who will not fall in love with them?  :)

What else makes it world class?

Of course, story makes it not just world class but timeless!  This time though, the conflict between  Maria and the Baroness was not direct.  It was Georg's decision on wealth and loyalty to country that pushed the Baroness away.  I also like the change made on Rolf's role when he did not divulge to the Germans that the von Trapps are inside the abbey.  It showed love can exist even in turbulent times.  (There were scenes I didn't see in the film version like the Baroness' persuasion on Captain von Trapp.)

The only thing which I think which needs a little  improvement is the sound.  Sheila Francisco as Mother Abbess is a great performance, but I had a hard time hearing her speak and sing.  if not for her powerful singing voice, I would have completely not understand her.  Brigitta is well loved too but if I heard speak more clearly, I will be more fascinated.

Each scene is something to look forward to but given if it's three hours, I would have taken out some scenes that dragged the time, like that part with the Baroness singing.  It's not because of Pinky Amador as she did well in the play.  Perhaps the music in that scene is something that I am not familiar with and I am not keen on remembering so I just hoped then that next scene comes up at once.

So what more makes it world class?

All the elements I mentioned made it world class! And the fact that Resorts World Manila is at the helm, there is no doubt that The Sound of Music is a world class production.
